estribor
/estɾiˈboɾ/ · B2 · noun · m
starboard
⛵ estribor = from Old English stēorbord, the steering-board side of a ship
Sailors steered with an oar on the right side of the ship, called the steer-board. Spanish borrowed it via Germanic roots (es-ti-bor ≈ steer-board). So estribor sounds like steer-board = the right side, starboard.
