catarata

/kataˈɾata/ · B2 · noun · f

waterfall

🌊💧 Greek kata + rhaktes: 'down-rushing' water; cat-a-RAT-a: cat and rat fall

From Greek katarrhaktes, 'down-rusher' (kata = down, arassein = to strike or rush). Water crashing down is a waterfall. The same word was used for the eye cataract, as if a clouding portcullis or curtain had dropped over the lens.
