~派

~は · ~ha · JLPT N1 · noun

group

🌊 派 = river branch: a group splits off from the main current, like a stream forking away

Originally meant a branch of a river (流派 = flowing branches). A party or faction is a group that branches off the main current. Its sound 'ha' matches the breath of a laugh at a party.

派 — water radical 氵 + 𠂢 (branching stream)
派 originally depicted branching tributaries of a river, with 氵 (water) added to reinforce the meaning. The right side 𠂢 shows a stream splitting into smaller channels. From 'river branch' it extended to mean a faction, school, or to dispatch/send out.
