陳列

ちんれつ · chinretsu · JLPT N1 · noun

display

🏬 陳 = lay out + 列 = row: lay items in a row to show = display

陳 means to set out or put on show, and 列 means a row or line. Setting things out in a row for viewers gives 陳列 its meaning of exhibition or display, as in a shop window or museum hall.

列 — 歹 (bone fragments) + 刂 (knife)
Originally depicted cutting bones apart with a knife, showing the act of separating things into pieces. The meaning extended from 'to divide' to 'arrange in a row' or 'sequence,' since dividing items naturally produces an ordered series. Today it primarily means 'row,' 'line,' or 'to list.'
