郷愁

きょうしゅう · kyoushuu · JLPT N1 · noun

homesickness

🏡 郷 (home village) + 愁 (sorrow) = sorrow for the home you left

郷 means hometown or home, and 愁 means sorrow or melancholy. Together they name the ache for a home you have left. The same 愁 appears in 哀愁, a wistful sadness.

愁 — autumn 秋 (top) + heart 心 (bottom)
A semantic compound combining 秋 (autumn) above 心 (heart). Autumn, with its withering leaves and fading light, traditionally evoked melancholy in Chinese poetry, so 'autumn over the heart' came to mean sorrow, worry, or anxiety. 秋 also hints at the sound.
