道場

どうじょう · doujou · JLPT N1 · noun

hall used for martial arts training

🥋 道 (way) + 場 (place) = place of the martial 'way'; a dojo is where karate and judo students train.

道 means 'way' or discipline, 場 means 'place' or 'field'. Together they name the hall where martial arts are practiced. Its older sense of mandala, a sacred circle, comes from Buddhist use.

道 — 辶 (walk) + 首 (head)
Originally a compound of 辶 'walk/movement' and 首 'head', depicting a path one walks while looking ahead. The literal sense 'road, way' extended metaphorically to 'method, doctrine, the Way (Dao)'. This philosophical meaning became central in Daoist and Confucian thought.
