逆転

ぎゃくてん · gyakuten · JLPT N1 · noun

change

逆 = reverse + 転 = turn: a reversal, a turn-around in the opposite direction

逆 (gyaku) means opposite or backwards, and 転 (ten) means turn or roll. Together they describe a sudden change of direction or fortune, as in 逆転勝ち, a comeback win.

逆 — 辶 walk + 屰 (inverted 大 person)
逆 combines the walking radical 辶 with 屰, a pictograph of an upside-down person. The original sense was 'to meet, go against the flow,' as if walking toward someone coming the opposite way. From this it extended to mean 'reverse, contrary, disobey.'
