逃げ出す

にげだす · nigedasu · JLPT N1 · verb-godan

to escape from

🏃 逃げ出す = 逃げ (flee) + 出す (put out): flee and burst out of the place

逃げ (nige) means flee and 出す (dasu) means to put out or send out. Together they mean to run away by bolting out of a place. Compare 飛び出す (tobidasu), to jump out.

逃 — 辶 walk radical + 兆 zhào (phonetic)
逃 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The walking radical 辶 carries the meaning of motion or going, while 兆 supplies the sound. Together they convey the idea of moving away, hence 'to flee' or 'to escape'.

出 — foot 止 emerging from enclosure 凵
出 is a pictograph showing a foot or plant stepping out of a hollow or enclosure, depicting the act of going forth. The original sense of 'coming out' or 'emerging' has remained stable since oracle bone script. It now broadly means 'to exit, go out, or produce.'
