辟易

へきえき · hekieki · JLPT N1 · noun

being frightened

辟 = avoid + 易 = change (of face colour): you recoil in fright, face blanching

From the Shiji: soldiers so terrified of a fierce general that they shrank back and their faces changed. Here 易 means change, not easy, so hekieki is 'avoid and change countenance'.
