身の上

one's personal history

身 (body/self) + 上 (on top): what sits on your body's path, your life's circumstances, fate, and welfare.

Used for one's lot in life, personal history, or future prospects. 身の上話 is a story of one's past; 身の上相談 asks for advice about one's circumstances.

身 — pictograph of a pregnant body
身 is a pictograph originally depicting a person with a swollen belly, representing a pregnant woman in profile. Over time the meaning broadened from 'pregnancy' or 'torso' to refer to the body in general, and by extension oneself or one's person.

上 — horizontal line above a baseline
上 is an indicative character (指事): a short stroke placed above a longer reference line shows the concept of 'above' or 'up'. The earliest oracle-bone forms used two horizontal lines for this; the modern shape added a vertical stroke for clarity. The core meaning of 'upper, above, to ascend' has stayed stable for millennia.
