訂正

ていせい · teisei · JLPT N1 · noun

correction

訂 (set/arrange) + 正 (correct): arrange it again to make it right

訂 means to draw up or set, and 正 means correct or right. Together they mean fixing a text or plan so it becomes right. Think of 訂正 as making a correction.

正 — one 一 + stop 止
Originally an ideograph showing a foot (止) advancing toward a target line (一), meaning 'to march straight toward' a city or goal. From this came the senses 'upright,' 'correct,' and 'proper.' The military sense survives in 征 (to campaign), which took over the original 'march' meaning.
