見合い

みあい · miai · JLPT N1 · noun

interview

見合い = 見 (see) + 合い (meet each other): both sides look each other over

見 is the 見る (to look) of seeing, and 合い is the noun form of 合う (to meet or match). Miai is a formal meeting where two families and their candidates see whether they fit as a marriage partner.

合 — 乛 (lid/roof) + 口 (mouth)
Originally a pictograph of a lidded vessel — a cover (亼) closing over an opening (口) — giving the core sense of 'come together, join, fit.' From 'fit/match' it extended to 'combine, unite, agree' and to measure-word uses. The reading hé reflects this 'joining' meaning.
