覆面

ふくめん · fukumen · JLPT N1 · noun

mask

覆面 — mask

🎭 覆 (fuku, cover) + 面 (men, face): a cover over the face is a mask

覆面 combines 覆 (fuku, to cover) and 面 (men, face). The same 面 appears in 面接 (interview) and 仮面 (mask), so the men part is worth learning on its own.

面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
