荷造り

にづくり · nidukuri · JLPT N1 · noun

packing material

📦 荷 = load/cargo, 造り = making/building: making a load, so packing up your things

荷 (ni) means cargo or luggage, and 造り (dukuri) means making or constructing. Together, 荷造り means the act of making up a load, which is packing a bag, box, or crate for travel or shipping.

造 — 辶 (walk) + 告 (tell/announce)
造 combines the walking radical 辶 with 告 (announce), which also gives the sound. Originally it meant 'to go and report to,' then 'to reach' or 'arrive at.' Over time the meaning shifted to 'to make' or 'to build,' the sense most common today.
