統率

とうそつ · tousotsu · JLPT N1 · noun

command

🎖️ 統率 = 統 (unify, govern) + 率 (lead): governing and leading a group, like a general

統 means unify or rule over, and 率 means lead or set the pace. Put together they describe directing a force as a whole, which is why the word fits military command and general leadership.

率 — twisted silk threads with droplets, plus 十
率 originally pictured a net or twisted bundle of silk cords with water droplets shaking off, suggesting something being led or pulled along. From 'leading a rope' it extended to 'lead, command' (shuài) and to 'rate, ratio' (lǜ), as in a fixed proportion. The two readings share this core image of a guiding measure.
