税務署

office

税務署 — office

🧾 税 (tax) + 務 (duties) + 署 (office) = the office for tax duties

税 means tax, 務 means duties or affairs, and 署 means a government office. The same 署 ending appears in 警察署 (police station) and 消防署 (fire station).

税 — grain radical 禾 + 兑 (exchange/phonetic)
税 combines 禾 (grain) with 兑 (exchange), which also hints at the sound. In ancient China taxes were paid in grain, so the character originally meant a levy of harvest given to the state. Its meaning later broadened to taxes and duties of any kind.
