準急

じゅんきゅう · junkyuu · JLPT N1 · noun

train

準急 — train

🚆 準 (semi, quasi) + 急 (express) = semi-express, a local express slower than a full express

準 means semi or quasi, and 急 means express or hurry. A 準急 stops at more stations than an express, so it is a semi-express.

急 — heart radical 心 + 及 (reach)
A semantic-phonetic compound: the heart radical 心 supplies the meaning (an emotional state) while 及 ('to reach, catch up') gives the sound. Originally it depicted a racing, anxious heart — hence the modern senses 'urgent,' 'hurried,' and 'impatient.'
