武力

ぶりょく · buryoku · JLPT N1 · noun

might

⚔️ 武力 = martial (武) + force (力): the might of the sword and armed power

武 (bu) is the 'martial' radical, from 止 stop + 戈 spear, meaning war-ready arms. 力 (ryoku) is plain 'force'. Together: armed might.

力 — pictograph of a plow or arm muscle
力 originated as a pictograph of an ancient plow, the main tool requiring physical exertion in early agriculture. Some scholars also see it as a flexed arm showing muscle. From this concrete image it broadened to mean 'strength, power, force, effort'.
