果てる

はてる · hateru · JLPT N1 · verb-ichidan

to end

🏁 Etymology: 果 is fruit or result; 果てる is a season reaching its final stage, so it ends.

The kanji 果 means fruit or result. When a plant has finished bearing, its season is over, and 果てる extends that to anything that runs out, is exhausted, or is finished.

果 — fruit shape 田-like top + tree 木
果 is a pictograph: early forms show a tree (木) with round fruit hanging on its branches, later stylized into the 田-like top. Its original meaning was 'fruit', which extended to 'result, outcome' — the fruit of an action — and to 'resolute, decisive'.
