本国

ほんごく · hongoku · JLPT N1 · noun

state

本 = main/root + 国 = country: your root country, the one you come from

本 means root, origin or main, as in 日本 (Japan, sun origin). 本国 is the country you are rooted in. Its opposite is 外国 gaikoku, the outside, foreign country.

本 — tree 木 + mark at base
本 is a pictograph of a tree (木) with a stroke at its base, marking the roots. From this 'root' meaning it extended to 'origin,' 'source,' and 'foundation.' In modern usage it also serves as a measure word for bound objects like books.

国 — enclosure 囗 + jade 玉
国 is a simplified form of 國. The outer 囗 represents borders or an enclosed territory, while the inner 玉 (jade) suggests a treasured realm ruled by a sovereign. The traditional 國 used 或 inside, depicting a guarded region with a weapon, later simplified by replacing it with 玉.
