時刻表
じこくひょう · jikokuhyou · JLPT N1 · noun
schedule
🕒🚆 時刻 (jikoku) = time of day + 表 (hyou) = table: a table of times
時刻 is a point in time and 表 is a chart or table. Together they name a table listing when trains leave and arrive. Say jikoku-hyou, with hyou sounding like the 'hyo' in 'hyoh'.
刻 — knife radical 刂 + 亥 (phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The right side 亥 supplies the sound, while the knife radical 刂 on the right gives the meaning, since 刻 originally referred to carving or engraving with a blade. From 'to carve' it extended to marking time notches on a sundial, hence the modern sense of 'a moment' or 'quarter hour'.
表 — fur 毛 on top + garment 衣 below
Originally depicted an outer fur garment, with 毛 (fur) above 衣 (clothing), showing the hairy outside of a coat. From 'outer garment' it extended to mean 'outside, surface,' then 'to show, express, display,' and later 'table, chart' as something laid out on the surface.
