旅券
りょけん · ryoken · JLPT N1 · noun
pass
🛂 旅 (travel) + 券 (ticket): a ticket for travelling abroad, which is what a passport is
券 (ken) also appears in 入場券 (admission ticket) and 食券 (meal ticket), so the suffix marks a ticket or voucher. 旅 (ryo) means travel.
券 — ⺉ knife radical + 龹 (phonetic top)
Originally written 券, depicting a tally cut with a knife (刀/⺉) into two halves so each party could keep proof of an agreement. The top element 龹 supplies the sound. From this 'split tally' sense it came to mean a certificate, ticket, or voucher.
