敢えて
あえて · aete · JLPT N1 · adverb
dare
🎲 敢 = bold, so 敢えて = to do it boldly, daring to act anyway
The kanji 敢 means bold or daring. 敢えて is used for doing something on purpose despite risk or expectation, as in 敢えて言う (dare to say it).
敢 — 耳 ear + 又 hand (right) + 攵-like top
Oracle bone forms show a hand seizing an animal or object, suggesting boldness in taking hold. Later script regularized the shape, with components resembling a hand grasping near an ear. The original sense of daring to seize extended to the modern meaning 'to dare' or 'bold.'
