控える

to hold back
控 (hold, control) + える: to hold something back, keep it under control; 控 also means to jot down, as in noting on a sheet
控 means to pull back or restrain, and by extension to write something down for later. Both senses come from holding a thing in reserve: hold it back, or hold it on paper.
