抜け出す

ぬけだす · nukedasu · JLPT N1 · verb-godan

to excel

🏃 抜け出す = 抜ける (pull out, come out) + 出す (put out): slip out of a spot and head outside

抜け (nuke) means to come out of something tight, and 出す (dasu) means to take out. Together they give 'to slip out', and 'excel' comes from leaving the pack behind.

出 — foot 止 emerging from enclosure 凵
出 is a pictograph showing a foot or plant stepping out of a hollow or enclosure, depicting the act of going forth. The original sense of 'coming out' or 'emerging' has remained stable since oracle bone script. It now broadly means 'to exit, go out, or produce.'
