従来
じゅうらい · juurai · JLPT N1 · noun
now
従 (follow) + 来 (come) = what has come to follow until now: up to now, so far
従来 literally means 'following along, coming down the line,' so it marks what has been the norm until now. Think of traditional as the path that has kept coming up to today.
来 — pictograph of a wheat plant with grain heads
来 originally depicted a stalk of wheat with drooping grain heads, and meant 'wheat' in oracle bone script. It was later borrowed phonetically to write the unrelated verb 'to come,' which became its dominant meaning. The original 'wheat' sense was taken over by 麥 (now 麦).
