徐行
じょこう · jokou · JLPT N1 · noun
going slowly
🐢 徐 = slow, 行 = go. Slow + go = going slowly (the sign on slow-zone roads).
徐 also appears in 徐々に, meaning little by little. 行 is the same character as in 旅行 (travel) and 行進 (march), so it always carries the idea of moving.
行 — crossroads pictograph (left 彳 + right 亍)
行 originally pictured a four-way crossroads in oracle bone script, with two paths meeting. From 'road' it extended to 'walk, go, travel,' and then to 'a row, line' or 'business firm' (read háng). The two halves 彳 and 亍 are the split sides of that ancient crossroads.
