尽きる

つきる · tsukiru · JLPT N1 · verb-ichidan

to be used up

⌛ 尽 = exhaust, all the way; 尽きる = to be used up, run out (intransitive)

The kanji 尽 means exhaust or use up, as in 無尽蔵 (inexhaustible). 尽きる is intransitive, so the supply runs out on its own, while the transitive 尽くす means to exhaust or devote something.

尽 — hand 彐 holding brush over fire 灬
Originally depicted a hand holding a brush sweeping out the last embers in a vessel, suggesting 'finishing' or 'using up.' The simplified form 尽 replaces the older 盡, but keeps the core meaning of exhausting or completing something fully.
