就業

しゅうぎょう · shuugyou · JLPT N1 · noun

employment

💼 就 = take up, 業 = work: taking up work, i.e. employment or starting a job

就 means to take up or move toward, and 業 means work or trade. Together they name the moment you take up a job. The same 業 appears in 工業 (industry) and 授業 (lesson).

就 — 京 (capital) + 尤 (especially)
Originally a compound suggesting going to a high place (京 depicts a tall building) to settle or accomplish something. Over time the meaning shifted from 'approach a high place' to 'go to,' then broadened to 'accomplish,' and finally to the modern grammatical senses 'then,' 'just,' or 'precisely.'
