対面

たいめん · taimen · JLPT N1 · noun

meeting

対 (facing) + 面 (face) = face to face, so 対面 means an in-person meeting

対 means facing or opposite, and 面 means face or surface. Together they describe two people facing each other directly, which is why 対面 covers in-person interviews and meetings rather than calls.

面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
