変革

へんかく · henkaku · JLPT N1 · noun

change

🔄 変 (change) + 革 (leather): leather was reworked and remade, so 'change' is a deep transformation, like tanning hide into new goods

革 originally meant leather, a material that is cured and reshaped. 変革 is the sweeping kind of change, as in the Reformation (宗教改革).
