基金

ききん · kikin · JLPT N1 · noun

fund

💰 基 (base) + 金 (money) = a base of money = fund

基 means base or foundation, and 金 means money or gold. Together they form a money base, which is a fund. The 'foundation' sense of the word comes from the 基 part.

金 — roof 亼 + two dots (metal nuggets) + earth 土
Originally a pictograph of metal nuggets buried in the earth beneath a covering, with the two dots representing pieces of ore. It first meant 'metal' broadly, then narrowed to 'gold' as the most precious metal, and by extension 'money'.
