噴出

ふんしゅつ · funshutsu · JLPT N1 · noun

spewing

🌋 噴 (spout, mouth radical 口) + 出 (come out) = spewing or gushing out

Volcanoes and geysers are 噴出: lava, gas and water burst out. 噴 alone means spray or spurt, and 出 adds the sense of coming out.

出 — foot 止 emerging from enclosure 凵
出 is a pictograph showing a foot or plant stepping out of a hollow or enclosure, depicting the act of going forth. The original sense of 'coming out' or 'emerging' has remained stable since oracle bone script. It now broadly means 'to exit, go out, or produce.'
