取り巻く
とりまく · torimaku · JLPT N1 · verb-godan
to surround
🧶 取る (take hold) + 巻く (wind around) = to wind around and hold: surround
取り巻く joins 取る (to grab, take hold of) and 巻く (to wind, coil around). Together they describe something coiling around and gathering in a whole circle, like yarn wound around a core.
取 — ear 耳 + hand 又
取 originally depicted a hand (又) grasping an ear (耳), referencing the ancient practice of soldiers cutting off enemies' left ears as proof of kills to claim rewards. The meaning broadened from 'seize/take by force' to the general sense of 'take, get, obtain' used today.
