即する
そくする · sokusuru · JLPT N1 · verb-suru
to conform to
🧩 即 = right up against + する = to do: fitting closely to a standard
即 means right next to or on the spot. 即する means to stay right up against a rule or situation, so you conform to it or adapt to it. The kanji gives the closeness and する gives the action.
即 — 皀 (food vessel) + 卩 (kneeling person)
Originally a pictograph showing a person kneeling beside a food vessel, about to eat. The original sense was 'to approach (the meal)' or 'to draw near.' From this came extended meanings like 'immediately,' 'at once,' and 'namely,' since approaching something happens right away.
