占領
せんりょう · senryou · JLPT N1 · noun
occupation
占 = seize a spot + 領 = territory: take control of a territory
占 means to take or hold a place, and 領 means territory or domain. Together they give the sense of taking over an area as your own. The same logic covers having a room to yourself: the space becomes your territory.
占 — divination 卜 + mouth 口
Originally a pictograph showing a divination crack 卜 above a mouth 口, depicting someone speaking the result of an oracle reading. From this 'declare by divination' sense it broadened to 'occupy, take possession of' (now read zhàn) and 'divine, foretell' (read zhān).
