区画

くかく · kukaku · JLPT N1 · noun

section

🗺️ 区 = district + 画 = draw a line: kukaku is an area divided off by drawn lines

区 means ward or division, and 画 means to draw or mark a boundary. A 区画 is a plot or section marked off by lines, such as city blocks on a map.

区 — enclosure 匚 + 品 (items)
Originally a pictograph of items (品) hidden inside a container (匚), meaning to store or conceal. The sense extended to a bounded space, then to an administrative district or area. As a surname read Ōu, it preserves the older 'hidden/enclosed' nuance.

画 — hand 一 + field 田 + frame 凵
Originally a pictograph of a hand holding a brush drawing boundaries around a field, depicting the act of marking out land. The top once showed a brush (聿), and 田 represents the field being divided. Over time it came to mean 'to draw, paint' and also 'a stroke' in characters.
