分配

ぶんぱい · bunpai · JLPT N1 · noun

sharing

➗🤝 分 (divide) + 配 (match out): splitting something into portions and handing them out, which is both division and sharing

Both senses come from the same act: cut a whole into parts, then allot each part to someone. Math division and giving out shares are one idea.

分 — knife 刀 + eight 八 (split apart)
分 originally depicted a knife (刀) cutting something into two parts, shown by 八 above (which itself meant 'divide'). The core sense is 'to divide' or 'split', from which extended meanings like 'portion', 'minute', and 'part' developed. Pronounced fèn, it carries the sense of an allotted share.

配 — wine vessel 酉 + self 己
Originally depicted a person 己 beside a wine jar 酉, suggesting matching or distributing wine at ceremonies. From this came the meaning 'to pair, match, distribute,' and later 'to deserve' or 'to mix/compound.' The 酉 component gives the wine-related semantic root, while 己 contributes phonetically.
