傾斜

けいしゃ · keisha · JLPT N1 · noun

slope

🛝 傾 = lean, 斜 = slant: lean + slant together name a slope or tilt

Both characters carry the idea of tilting: 傾 means lean or incline, and 斜 means slanted or diagonal. Together they name any tilt, from a hillside slope to a dip on a graph.

斜 — dipper 斗 + give 余 (phonetic)
斜 is a phonosemantic compound. The right side 斗 (a ladle or dipper) gives the meaning, since pouring from a dipper tilts it sideways. The left side 余 supplies the sound. From 'tilted ladle' the meaning broadened to 'slanting, oblique, askew.'
