保管

ほかん · hokan · JLPT N1 · noun

detention

🔐 保 = keep safe + 管 = manage: keeping something safe while you manage it for someone

保 means keep or protect; 管 means pipe, and by extension control or manage. Together they describe holding and looking after something on someone's behalf, as with documents, valuables or goods in storage.

保 — person 亻 + 呆 (child/protect phonetic)
Originally an ideograph showing an adult carrying a child on the back, meaning to protect or shield. The right side 呆 evolved from a depiction of a swaddled infant. Over time the meaning broadened from 'protect a child' to 'preserve, guarantee, keep safe.'

管 — bamboo radical 竹 + official 官 (phonetic)
Originally a pictograph of a bamboo tube or pipe, written with the bamboo radical 竹 on top. The lower component 官 supplies the sound. From 'bamboo pipe' it extended to 'tube,' then to 'manage' or 'control' — since pipes channel and regulate flow, the meaning shifted toward administration.
