企画
きかく · kikaku · JLPT N1 · noun
planning
🗂️ 企 (plan, stand on tiptoe to see ahead) + 画 (draw, sketch) = sketch out a plan before you act
企 means to stand on tiptoe to look ahead, and 画 means a drawn plan or design. Together they make 企画: planning ahead and sketching the project's outline before starting.
画 — hand 一 + field 田 + frame 凵
Originally a pictograph of a hand holding a brush drawing boundaries around a field, depicting the act of marking out land. The top once showed a brush (聿), and 田 represents the field being divided. Over time it came to mean 'to draw, paint' and also 'a stroke' in characters.
