仕立てる

したてる · shitateru · JLPT N1 · verb-ichidan

to prepare

👔 仕 (serve) + 立てる (stand up): to stand up a thing for someone, i.e. to tailor, make, or prepare it

The verb 仕立てる is built from 仕 (serve, do) and 立てる (set upright, raise). Think of setting up a garment for a customer: the tailor makes it, and the same sense stretches to making or preparing something.

立 — person standing on ground (大 over 一)
Pictograph of a person standing with arms outstretched on the ground line below. The original oracle bone form clearly shows a frontal human figure planted on the earth. The core meaning 'to stand' extended to 'establish, set up, erect.'
