仕切る

しきる · shikiru · JLPT N1 · noun

partition

✂️ 仕 (do, serve) + 切る (cut): to do the cutting up, so to divide, partition, or mark off

The kanji 仕 means serve or do, and 切る means cut. Doing the cutting to split a space into sections gives the partition sense. The same cutting-up idea extends to managing or running things.

切 — 七 (phonetic) + 刀 (knife radical)
切 is a semantic-phonetic compound: 刀 'knife' gives the meaning of cutting, while 七 supplies the sound. The original sense was to slice or cut with a blade. From there it extended figuratively to 'close to' (as in pressed against) and 'urgent/earnest', as in 切实.
