主食

しゅしょく · shushoku · JLPT N1 · noun

food

🍚🍞 主 (main) + 食 (food) = the main food you eat every day: staple food

主 means main or chief, and 食 means food or to eat. Rice, bread or noodles form the staple of a meal, so 主食 is the food that makes up most of what you eat.

主 — flame/lamp on top of a stand 王
Originally a pictograph of a lamp with a flame on top of its stand, representing the lord or master of the household who tended the fire. The meaning extended from 'lamp/host' to 'master, owner, main, principal'. The character 炷 (wick) preserves the original 'lamp' sense.
