丸ごと
まるごと · marugoto · JLPT N1 · adverb
in its entirety
🍉 丸 = round, unbroken + ごと = all of it: the whole thing, uncut
丸 (round, complete) plus ごと (all of, together with) gives 'all of it, no parts left out'. Used for a melon bought uncut, or for reading a whole book.
丸 — 九 nine + dot 丶
Originally a pictograph showing a small round object or pellet, depicting something that can be rolled. The modern form resembles 九 with a dot, but historically it derives from 仄 inverted, suggesting something tipping or rolling. It came to mean 'round ball,' 'pellet,' or 'pill.'
