中和

ちゅうわ · chuuwa · JLPT N1 · noun

neutralize

🧪 中 (middle) + 和 (harmony) = pull extremes back to the middle for balance

Chemists use 中和 when an acid and a base cancel out to a neutral midpoint. Since 和 also means harmony, the word covers any counteracting that restores balance.

中 — vertical stroke 丨 through enclosure 口
Pictograph of a banner or pole piercing the center of a target or territory, depicting the idea of 'middle' or 'center'. The horizontal frame represents boundaries, and the vertical line marks the central axis. The meaning extended from spatial center to 'middle, central, China' (中国, the Middle Kingdom).

和 — grain 禾 (phonetic) + mouth 口
和 is a phono-semantic compound: 禾 (grain) gives the sound and 口 (mouth) hints at meaning, originally suggesting voices joining in agreement or song. From this it came to mean harmony, peace, and 'together with'. In Japanese it also became the native word for Japan itself.
