不順

ふじゅん · fujun · JLPT N1 · na-adj

irregularity

不 (not) + 順 (in order, smooth) = not smooth, not in order; fu-jun, like 'food-jun' shows 'not in order'

不 means 'not' and 順 means 'in order' or 'smooth' (as in 順利). Together they describe something irregular or out of season. The on-reading 'fu-jun' is a reliable sound cue.

不 — single pictograph; bird flying upward
Originally a pictograph in oracle bone script, traditionally interpreted as a bird flying up toward the sky and unable to come down, suggesting negation or refusal. Over time it became the standard negation word in Chinese, used before verbs and adjectives to mean 'not'.
