一挙に
いっきょに · ikkyoni · JLPT N1 · adverb
at a stroke
🏋️ 一 (one) + 挙 (lift, raise) = one lift, so everything is done in a single go
挙 means lift or raise, as in 挙手 (raising a hand). Lifting it all in one motion gives 一挙に: at a stroke, in one swoop.
一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'
