usted

/usˈted/ · A1 · pron

second person formal

usted = shrunk from vuestra merced, your mercy

Old Spanish addressed superiors as vuestra merced (your mercy). Fast speech wore it down: vuestra merced > vuesarced > usted. That is why usted is formal and takes third-person verbs, like saying your grace is.
