torturar
/toɾtuˈɾaɾ/ · B1 · verb
to torture
⛓️ From Latin torquere, to twist, the same root as torque and contort
Latin torquere meant to twist, and tortura was a twisting, because early torture racked and wrenched the body. English shares the root in torture, torque, contort and tortuous. Spanish adds the -ar verb ending: tortura + -ar = torturar.
